“I wanted to translate Addiction to colours. Since colours are an important part of human expression, Make Up just struck me as the way to go. One can be addicted to anything, why not colours, crazy Make Up? It’s definitely a trait de caractere.” Bruce Soyez-Bernard

“We imagined a Japanese woodblock print bringing life to the original Japanese Geisha. Her ornate preparation of self echoes the blossoms reaching the apex of their beauty. The painterly quality of the photos impulsively leads one to imagine times past, but anachronistic decorative elements shoot her into the future, bringing her to today.” Stefan Giftthaler

Kurv Magazine, Guido Palau for Redken 5th Avenue NYC - Milan, Paris, New York Autumn/Winter 2010. Guido Palau, Redken 5th Avenue NYC Creative Consultant is considered to be one of the world’s most conceptual hairstylists. Renowned design houses including Calvin Klein, Prada, and Louis Vuitton go to Guido to create the looks that lead the direction of hair for the upcoming season. Having a strong presence in the industry for over 20 years, Guido has brought his radically expressive style to runway shows, fashion advertising campaigns and editorial work. Referencing Autumn Winter 2010 hair trends, he says: “This season we looked at everything with a different point of view, and took different directions to update iconic styles—everything from ‘60s boho to ‘90s grunge.” “There’s been a calming feeling in the atmosphere this year—something saying that natural hair can be sexy and beautiful.”
“Deep side parts are a strong look that nods toward masculinity, but with a sexy attitude as well. It helps you make a strong statement, without having to over-do your hair.”
Specifically we look at Redken's Autumn Winter 2010 hair trend, High Drama. These artistic updos for maximum glam, see lacquer finishes and dramatic shapes give this season’s look a modern, sculpted feel as witnessed on the runways of Balenciaga, Loewe, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent.
Redken How-To Tips: • The updo seen at Prada was a nod to “classic French hairdressing.” Guido used thickening lotion 06 body builder to prep models’ hair, then locked in their full-volume chignons with a generous amount of forceful 23 super-strength finishing spray. • “At Yves Saint Laurent, we took a classic chignon and modernised it for the design house,” says Guido. How did he manage to give this traditional look a modern touch? Simple—by applying hardwear 16 super strong gel around the hairline to create a lacquer finish. • The final touch for any sculpted updo: a shine-boosting hairspray. Backstage favourite quick dry 18 instant finishing spray will keep any updo in control with a firm, no-fuss finish.
