Kurv Magazine presents MB&F Horological Machine No4 Thunderbolt.

Kurv Magazine presents MB&F Horological Machine No4 Thunderbolt.

A traditional wristwatch has a relatively straightforward role: to tell the time. All that is needed is a hand for the hours, another for the minutes and perhaps a power reserve indicator to keep track of running time. Horological Machine No4 Thunderbolt has a hand for the hours, another for the minutes and a power reserve indicator. HM4 Thunderbolt tells the time.

HM4 Thunderbolt is not a traditional wristwatch.
The aviation-inspired case and engine of the Thunderbolt are one. Neither would, nor could, exist without the other, yet each is so transcendental as to be able to stand alone as a work of art in its own right.

The Thunderbolt's engine is the culmination of three long years of development. Each of the 300-plus components – including the regulator and even the screws – was developed specifically for this anarchistic calibre. Horizontally configured dual mainspring barrels drive two vertical gear trains, transferring power to the twin pods indicating hours/minutes and power reserve.

But describing HM4's engine through its mechanical functionality is like describing Renoir's work through the chemical composition of his paint. Only careful contemplation enables full appreciation, and the sapphire case section and display panels top and bottom allow full access to the flawless fine finishing of HM4's intricate and vibrant micro-mechanics.

The sleek aerodynamic form of the Thunderbolt's titanium and sapphire envelope has its roots in Maximilian Büsser's childhood passion for assembling model plane kits, though none looked remotely as futuristic as this. The striking transparent sapphire section of the case requires over 100 hours of machining and polishing to transform an opaque solid block of crystal into a complex, exquisitely curved panel allowing the light to come in and the beauty of Thunderbolt's engine to stand out. Every component and form has a technical purpose; nothing is superfluous and every line and curve is in poetic harmony.  Articulated lugs ensure supreme comfort. Highly legible time is a fringe benefit.

Kurv Magazine, House of Ladoire presents Roller Guardian Time.

Kurv Magazine, House of Ladoire presents Roller Guardian Time.

With its asymmetrical case, deconstructed time display and gentle curves contrasting with a powerful architecture, the RGT disrupts codes and combines opposites in providing an offbeat and resolutely avant-garde take on Haute Horlogerie.

Since 2007, the Geneva-based House of Ladoire has been playing with contradictions and associating extremes within atypical creations featuring cutting- tune with an underground-rock style mood inspired by contemporary culture and some of its most famous exponents such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Andy Warhol and Philippe Starck.
The daringly asymmetrical Roller Guardian Time RGT confronts a virile design with the soft lines and silk touch of the case middle, while the resolutely technical nature of the display stands out against the backdrop of the ultra-refined movement decorations. edge complications and sophisticated aesthetics.
Under the impetus of Lionel Ladoire, the design of these models is defined, shaped and matured in.

Stemming from an unbridled imagination and a decidedly offbeat mind-set – symbolised by the signature spider’s web engraved on the GMT wheel and the ratchet – LADOIRE Genève creations shake up traditional watchmaking codes and favour deconstructed time displays.

Endowed with an extraordinarily complex display mode and unusual dimensions, the innovative concept of the H M S Planetary® complication is duly protected by a patent.

The entirely offset Hour, Minute and Seconds indications of this Regulator-type model are displayed by three cages mounted on ceramic micro ball bearings. The RGT also features a GMT function with a central hand that can be rapidly adjusted via a dedicated corrector push-button at 2 o’clock.

Crafted according to the rigorous standards of fine leather-making, the blue alligator leather LADOIRE strap features a hand-sewn matt black leather lining and is fitted with an articulated double pin buckle.

This summer, Lionel Ladoire is introducing a three-piece limited edition on which the revisited bridges, strap and dial sport a casual denim blue shade.

Kurv Magazine, Girard-Perregaux, Bi-Axial Tourbillon in white gold.

Kurv Magazine, Girard-Perregaux, Bi-Axial Tourbillon in white gold.

A spectacular watch, the Girard-Perregaux Biaxial Tourbillon in white gold takes devotees of rare mechanisms and sophisticated designs through a marvelous history, full of technical feats and aesthetic innovations.

The architecture of the straight and finely hollowed bridges was inspired by a pocket watch created in the 1860s by Constant Girard-Perregaux, which won a first class prize from the Neuchâtel Observatory. The design of these Bridges foreshadowed the final and famous arrow-shaped Bridges.

The Bi-axial Tourbillon takes the Tourbillon to another dimension: the cage not only rotates on its own axis but also on a second axis, thus enabling the Tourbillon to take a multitude of positions and ensuring excellent rate precision.

With its sober decoration and immediately recognizable straight gold Bridges, the Bi-axial Tourbillon is astonishingly modern. From the base plate to the tinniest screw, the finishing of the movement is spectacular and can only be achieved by few master watchmakers. The elliptical engraving on the barrel is a reminder of the barrel decoration of the historic pocket watch.

Limited to 33 pieces only in white gold, the Tourbillon Biaxial is among the most spectacular and exclusive pieces in Girard-Perregaux’s offering.

Kurv Magazine, Paspaley Opens Asian Flagship Boutique at 1881 Heritage, Canton Road Hong Hong.

Paspaley opens its Asian flagship store, a magnificent 200 square metre pearl emporium on Canton Road. Located in one of Hong Kong’s most significant historical sites – 1881 Heritage, the original headquarters of the Hong Kong Marine Police from the 1880s to the 1990s – the boutique represents an important new chapter in the growth of one of Australia’s most successful home-grown luxury brands.

Set in the heart of Tsim Shah Tsui, the new Paspaley store joins brands such as Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels, Rolex and Piaget to create Hong Kong’s newest and most glamorous luxury precinct. With its colonial architecture and beautifully preserved façade, 1881 was a natural choice for Paspaley’s Asian flagship, evocative of the spirit to the grand historic Sydney flagship store and an environment befitting “the most beautiful pearls in the world”.

The new boutique interior has been modelled after Paspaley’s Sydney flagship and features a spectacular marine-inspired design and the finest materials and craftsmanship. The store incorporates Paspaley ‘signature’ design elements such as Indian marble floors and exclusive private viewing rooms. Paspaley’s precious gems are displayed in superb hand-finished timber jewellery cabinets underneath a glowing 3m gold-leaf ceiling dome, created using delicate water gilding techniques with Dutch gold leaf.

The boutique is Paspaley’s second in Asia, joining the boutique on Ice House Street in The Galleria, Central, Hong Kong, which opened in 2007. Paspaley jewellery has been available through Paspaley boutiques in Australia for over twenty years and in 2005, Paspaley launched its first international store in the United Arab Emirates. The brand now has four stores in Dubai and one in Abu Dhabi, two stores in Asia and four in Australia.
